Senior Manager, Engineering

Position Purpose and Impact

The Senior Manager / Director of Engineering is a high-impact player/coach responsible for leading and scaling delivery teams while remaining hands-on in the code. Reporting to the VP of Engineering, this leader manages the delivery, growth, and technical health of multiple engineering squads, splitting time roughly 50/50 between people management and direct engineering contribution.

This role requires a leader who is technically sharp and operationally rigorous. This leader drives the technical execution of the modern stack—Typescript, React, and AWS Serverless—while mentoring a high-caliber group of Senior, Staff, and Principal engineers. The goal is to set the standard for code quality and engineering culture, ensuring that the team builds scalable, maintainable software.

The Ideal Candidate

You are a "working manager" who believes the best way to lead engineers is from the front. You have deep experience in individual contributor (IC) roles and have successfully transitioned into leadership without losing your technical edge. You are as comfortable performing a code review or architecting a serverless solution as you are conducting a 1:1 or planning a sprint.

You are proficient in our modern toolchain—specifically Typescript (Node.JS) and React (TanStack Start)—and have experience architecting in an AWS Serverless environment. You excel at managing senior talent; you know how to unblock Staff and Principal engineers, facilitate high-level architectural debates, and foster a culture of collaboration using tools like GitHub, Jira, and Figma.

Key Responsibilities

Technical Leadership

  • Hands-on Engineering: Dedicate approximately 50% of capacity to coding, architecture, and code reviews. Actively contribute to the codebase alongside the team to maintain deep system knowledge.

  • Modern Stack Architecture: Lead the design and implementation of solutions using Typescript (Node.JS), React (TanStack Start preferred), and PostgreSQ.

  • Cloud Native Execution: Architect and deploy scalable solutions in an AWS Serverless (Lambda) environment, ensuring efficient and resilient infrastructure.

Team Management

  • Team Leadership: Lead multiple engineering squads, managing a primarily onshore (US-based) team while collaborating with offshore resources as needed.

  • Talent Acquisition & Growth: Play an active role in recruiting the next wave of engineering talent. You will serve as a lead technical interviewer and hiring decision-maker to scale our teams for the new platform build.

  • Talent Development: Directly manage and mentor high-level individual contributors, specifically guiding the career growth of engineers at the Senior, Staff, or Principal levels.

  • Delivery Excellence: Oversee the software delivery lifecycle using the core tool stack (GitHub, Slack, Jira, Confluence, Figma) to ensure transparency, velocity, and quality

Qualifications

  • IC Experience: 5+ years of experience in Individual Contributor (IC) roles with a focus on hands-on software engineering.

  • Management Experience: 2+ years in management, Team Lead, or Tech Lead positions.

  • Tech Stack Fluency: Recent, hands-on work with Typescript (Node.JS), React (TanStack Start preferred), and PostgreSQL.

  • Cloud Infrastructure: Proven experience working in an AWS Serverless environment (Lambda).

  • Leadership Scope: Demonstrated experience managing US-based (onshore) engineers and leading high-level technical talent (Senior/Staff/Principal).

  • Location: Preferred Austin or Dallas. If located in Austin (or remote), travel to Dallas once per month is required
